You could be right (and thank you for engaging respectfully), but to me and my gender experience this is not about society. Of course society impacts our definitions of man and woman, but I dont think that’s what gender identity is (a masculine trans man is not “defining himself as his own static version of masculinity", therefore erasing feminine men). It is-and I know many people hear this and scoff- a feeling that. One that manifests, whether solely positively (gender euphoria, i.e. when you’re referred to with the correct pronouns), only negatively (gender dysphoria, such as when you are not), or both. This is what I mean when I say gender (and trans) identity is independent from societal gender roles- even if “she" wasnt a “feminine” pronoun, or if misogyny did not exist, I would still be transmasculine.
Plus, as I’ve said before, that theory crumbles under the light of genderqueer trans people such as myself, who literally don’t follow any stereotypes or societal convention when it comes to gender. If identifying as a woman meant you identify with the stereotypical western gender role for women, why are there so many butch women? What about butch trans women?
Gender is a feeling rather than a reinforcement of learned and gathered gender roles because we (genderqueer and non-conforming people) are in constant rebellion against them
